What Is the Prostate? The prostate is a muscular gland between the penis and the bladder. It wraps around the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body. The prostate helps make semen and produces other important male enzymes and hormones. The prostate “pushes out” your ejaculations. It’s also the muscle you use to urinate. A normal, healthy prostate is around the size of a walnut. As men get older, it tends to grow. In half of men over 50, it expands to the size of a lemon. If your prostate gets too large, it can cause a number of health issues, including a constant urge to pee, and erectile dysfunction.
